To be fair, it’s probably not a good idea to completely embarrass yourself on AWA, but a solid-but-imperfect AWA score of, say, 5.0 almost certainly won’t keep you out of Stanford or Harvard. ![]() Sure, it might be nice to fill MBA programs with excellent writers, but that’s far from the front of business schools’ minds, and AWA scores have been shown to correlate only very weakly to student performance in MBA programs. So most schools don’t really give a crap about it. The AWA section has absolutely nothing to do with your composite score, and it therefore has no impact on MBA rankings. Unfortunately, some MBA rankings schemes penalize b-schools with low average GMAT scores, so admissions committees are forced to obsess over your GMAT composite results. Let’s start with the biggest reason why MBA programs care so deeply about GMAT scores in the first place: rankings. Why MBA Programs Barely Care About GMAT AWA There’s rarely any need to spend more than a token amount of time on AWA. Practicing with old GMAT AWA prompts will help your brain pick up on patterns in different arguments and help you master writing a strong essay in under 30 minutes.AWA arguments that are written in overconfident language often use words like “definitely,” “of course,” and “undoubtedly.” In vagueness, the argument may contain unclear terms and statistics that are used incorrectly to prove a point. In causality, there is a wrong effect to a wrong cause. The most common flaws are: causality, vagueness, and overconfidence. Identifying the flaws of an argument quickly will make writing your essay easier. Finally, the conclusion should summarize your points and how they invalidate the argument. Your introduction should restate the argument and the body paragraphs that follow should focus directly on addressing its specific flaws. Don’t get carried away by attempting to write a captivating and long essay. ![]() Setting up and sticking to a clear structure is another tip to keep in mind.If you don’t follow the directions, you won’t achieve a high score. AWA graders aren’t looking for a well-written, thoughtful opinion piece about the topic discussed in the prompt. They’re looking for you to analyze whether or not the argument itself was sound, and to back up that analysis with evidence from the text, and they’ll judge you on how well you accomplished that specific task. The AWA section specifically asks you to critique an argument on its strengths and weaknesses. Understanding and following directions is the most important tip on how to approach the GMAT essay question.The AWA does not count towards your total GMAT score, and that is why it is considered the least important section.A response receives two scores, one of which may be conducted by a computer, and at least one response is read and scored by a GMAT essay reader. ![]()
